Bone Grafting
A dental bone graft is a common dental procedure that replaces lost bone tissue in the jaw. Because the jaw will begin to atrophy (shrink) after tooth loss or as a result of infection, this procedure is often necessary prior to receiving dental implants. Bone grafting is a process of placing donor tissue in the jaw to replace tissue that has recessed following tooth loss or dental infection.
Do You Need Bone Grafting?
There are a few reasons why you might need a bone graft:
- To save your teeth – Periodontal (gum) disease develops when bacteria begins to build up below the gum line. If left untreated, this can lead to inflammation and bleeding of the gums (gingivitis). Eventually, you can develop tooth decay and infection, which can also lead to bone recession in the jaw. Once the decayed and infected tissue has been removed, bone grafts are performed to strengthen the jawbone.
- After tooth extraction – If you need to have any teeth removed, the dentist may recommend a bone graft to fill the empty sockets. This will help support the surrounding bone and tissue.
- Before dental implant surgery - Bone grafting is often performed prior to a dental implants procedure in order to provide a proper foundation. After tooth loss, the bone tissue in the jaw will begin to recede. If you wait a long time to address this issue, a graft will be necessary in order to support implants. Once in place, the implant will provide the stimulation necessary to prevent further bone recession.

The Bone Grafting Procedure
Bone grafting is performed on an outpatient basis using local anesthesia. If you are especially nervous about dental work, or have difficulty sitting comfortably for long periods, you can receive sedation upon request.
During the procedure, your dentist will create a small incision in the gums to expose the underlying jawbone. Bone grafting material is added to the affected area and covered with a protective membrane. In most cases, the donor tissue is purchased from a bone and tissue bank, although it can also be obtained from another area of the patient’s jaw. There are also synthetic materials available. Once the bone graft and membrane have been placed, the gums are repositioned and the incision is closed with sutures.
It may take several months for the graft to integrate with the jaw. Once this is complete, you can explore restorative treatments such as dental implants.
