Implant-Supported Dentures

Gain Superior Chewing Function with Implant-supported Dentures

There are multiple restorative treatments that replace missing teeth. Patients who are missing an entire arch of teeth are good candidates for dentures and implant-supported dentures. While dentures attach to the gums through the use of a topical bonding agent, implant-retained dentures are anchored to the jawbone through the use of titanium posts. There are many benefits to implant-supported dentures. Many of our patients in Metairie, LA, report that implants feel and function like real teeth. If you are looking for a permanent solution for missing teeth, Dr. Gregory Strain will be glad to meet with you and determine if you are a candidate for implant-supported dentures.

Benefits of Implant-supported Dentures

The main benefit of implant-supported dentures is that they provide superior function and greater stability over traditional dentures. Patients who have traditional dentures sometimes complain that the prosthetics slip out of place or are difficult to chew with. Individuals with implant-supported dentures do not have these problems since the prosthetic is anchored to the jaw.

If you are dissatisfied with traditional dentures or looking for a permanent solution to missing teeth, implants may be a great option for you.

After undergoing placement of your dental implants and prosthetic, you will be able to enjoy a diet that includes items that are difficult to chew or were prohibited with traditional dentures.

Patients with implant-supported dentures can benefit from:

  • Improved clarity of speech
  • Decreased gum tissue irritation
  • Elimination of denture shifting
  • Increased confidence when speaking in public
  • A permanent solution to tooth loss
  • A high success rate

Are You a Good Candidate?

The majority of patients who seek implant-supported dentures are good candidates. Implant placement requires oral surgery, meaning that patients should be in good overall oral health and free of any medical conditions or medication use that could compromise surgery and recovery. Since tobacco use can complicate recovery, Dr. Strain may recommend that candidates cease tobacco use for several weeks or longer prior to surgery. Candidates need to have adequate jawbone density in order to receive the titanium posts. If patients lack adequate jawbone density, dental bone grafting or sinus lift surgery can restore candidacy for implant placement.

A Look at the Procedure

Once Dr. Strain has established your candidacy for treatment, a date will be set for your outpatient surgery. Implant placement surgery is performed with local anesthesia, and possibly sedation. Once you are comfortable, Dr. Strain will make an incision in your gums to reach the jawbone. Each implant post will be placed in a predetermined area of your jaw. The incisions will be sutured and gauze will be placed over the surgical area to control bleeding. Recovery can take three to six months.

Once the implants are fully healed, small metal pieces called abutments will be placed on the titanium posts. Your custom dentures will then be attached to the abutments. One benefit of working with Dr. Strain is that his office has an advanced E4D CAD/CAM system that allows him to complete every step of restoration planning and manufacturing onsite.
